West Bengal Revises Deep-Sea Port Plan from Tajpur to Dadanpatrabar.

West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari recently said that the proposed deep-sea port at Tajpur in East Medinipur district is not “viable” due to the lack of available government land, adding that the state is now exploring an alternative site at nearby Dadanpatrabar.

Adhikari made the remarks at a media briefing at the state secretariat following a meeting with Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal. He said the decision follows a review of land availability and feasibility issues at the Tajpur site.

“I discussed the Tajpur port matter with Karan Adani, managing director of Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone, during a meeting on Wednesday. They have already exited the project. We have seen that at Tajpur there is no government land available. Therefore, it is not possible to set up a deep-sea port there; it would not be viable,” Adhikari said.

He added that he had raised similar concerns earlier when he served as Leader of Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly.

The Tajpur deep-sea port project had been revived in December last year when the then Mamata Banerjee-led government issued a fresh Request for Proposal (RFP) after scrapping an earlier tender process in which Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone (APSEZ) had emerged as the winning bidder.

The state government’s renewed focus on an alternative location marks a shift in its approach to developing a deep-sea port infrastructure in the region.
