Welspun Gujarat’s plate mill goes on stream

Mumbai: Welspun Gujarat Stahl Rohren Ltd commenced operations of its 1.5-million-tonne plate mill.

Part of a backward integration project, the mill can produce plates up to 4.5 meter width. Trial production commenced in September last and Welspun has been able to make plates of up to 4.5 meter width and steel grade of X70 and above of the API Grade.

Mr B. K. Goenka, Vice-Chairman and Managing Director, Welspun Group, said, “We believe that this mill will not only prove the engineering excellence that Welspun portrays but also strengthen its position globally.”

The availability of in-house plates will provide more flexibility in marketing the products. It will also improve Welspun’s internal flexibility to book short gestation orders. The capacity of the mill is 1.5 lakh tonnes per annum. The equipment in the mill is mostly from Europe. Welspun Gujarat plants are at Dahej and Anjar in Gujarat.
