Uttar Pradesh Government Commits Rs. 45,000 Crore to Boost Cargo Movement

The Uttar Pradesh (UP) government has announced plans to invest nearly Rs 45,000 crore in highways and tertiary roads during the current financial year 2024-25 (FY25), with the goal of enhancing passenger and cargo movement throughout the state.
These projects will encompass bridges and over-bridges across the state's 75 districts. Out of the total allocation, the public works department (PWD) will be responsible for nearly Rs 34,000 crore, or 75% of the total budget. The remaining Rs 11,000 crore will be allocated for various infrastructure projects in villages, tehsils, block headquarters, international and interstate border roads, roads in sugar mill and industrial areas, and roads under the 'Dharmarth' (religious tourist circuit) project.
The Yogi government had set aside funding for these road and highway projects in this year's budget. An additional Rs 800 crore was dedicated to road projects within industrial and logistics park corridors in UP, further emphasizing the state's commitment to improving transportation infrastructure.
A senior government official mentioned that around Rs 1,750 crore of the total budget for roads would be spent on 'Dharmarth' circuit projects this year. The state is using a GPS-based monitoring system to prevent time and cost overruns, with roads geo-tagged to ensure financial accountability in fund allocation.
The UP Expressway Industrial Development Authority (UPEIDA) serves as the nodal agency for expressway projects, while the PWD oversees the broader network of state highways, district roads, and tertiary roads. These investments aim to facilitate smoother transport and logistical operations, contributing to the state's economic growth and improved connectivity across the region.
