Samsung E&A Wins $3.5 Billion Saudi Ammonia-Urea EPC Contract

Samsung E&A has secured an engineering, procurement and construction contract worth about $3.5 billion from SABIC Agri-Nutrients Company for the development of a major ammonia and urea production complex in Jubail, Saudi Arabia. The project, known as the SAN-7 Project, is one of the largest fertilizer EPC awards announced in the Middle East this year.

The proposed complex will include a 1.2 million metric tonne per annum ammonia plant and two urea plants with a combined production capacity of 2.6 million metric tonnes per annum. The ammonia unit will use technology from KBR, while the urea plants will incorporate technologies from Stamicarbon and thyssenkrupp Uhde Fertilizer Technology. A carbon-capture system using Shell technology will also form part of the project.

Construction is scheduled to begin in the fourth quarter of 2026, with commissioning targeted from the third quarter of 2030 and commercial production planned for the fourth quarter of 2030.

Once operational, the project is expected to increase SABIC Agri-Nutrients’ urea capacity from 4.8 million tonnes to 7.4 million tonnes annually, supporting exports and strengthening Saudi Arabia’s position in the global fertilizer market.
