Meghalaya Expands Agro-Processing Capacity with Organic Spice Facility for 5,500 Farmers.

Union Finance and Corporate Affairs Minister Nirmala Sitharaman recently inaugurated the Organic Spice Industrial Unit (PRIME-HUB), described as North East India’s largest organic spice processing facility, at Bhoirymbong in Meghalaya.

The project, developed at an investment of ₹30 crore, is designed to significantly enhance value addition in the region’s organic agriculture sector. The facility will have an annual processing capacity of over 10,000 tonnes of organic spices.

According to officials, the unit is expected to benefit around 5,500 farmers across 112 villages by improving market access and supporting sustainable livelihood opportunities.

The project has been implemented by the Meghalaya Basin Management Agency in collaboration with the Eastern Ri-Bhoi Organic Farmer Producer Company (FPC) and the International Fund for Agricultural Development, under the Meghalaya Livelihoods and Access to Markets Project framework.

The government said the initiative aims to strengthen the organic spice value chain in the region and boost rural incomes through better processing infrastructure and integrated market linkages.
