Delhi Metro Phase III to Add FOBs, Ramps at 14 Interchange Stations for Smoother Connectivity.

The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) is set to enhance commuter convenience with the development of 14 new interchange stations under its Phase III expansion, aimed at enabling smoother and more efficient transfers across the network.

These upcoming interchange hubs will connect the Pink Line (Majlis Park–Shiv Vihar) and Magenta Line (Janakpuri West–Botanical Garden) with major existing corridors, including the Yellow, Red, Blue and Violet Lines. Designed as “ring” routes, the new lines will link several radial corridors at key junctions across the city, improving network integration.

To ensure seamless movement, DMRC plans to construct an extensive network of foot overbridges (FOBs), ramps, underground passages and travelators, covering a total length of more than three kilometres. The infrastructure is expected to significantly cut walking time and improve accessibility, particularly at high-footfall interchange stations.

At Dhaula Kuan, one of the longest foot overbridges will connect the Airport Express Line station with the Durgabai Deshmukh South Campus station on the Pink Line. Due to the considerable distance between the two points, the corridor will feature around 22 travelators, benefiting passengers, especially those carrying luggage to and from the airport.

Major interchange stations such as Anand Vihar and Botanical Garden will see full integration between existing and new corridors. Elsewhere, connectivity solutions will vary depending on station design, with FOBs linking elevated stations, ramps bridging level differences, and subways connecting underground sections.

Stations including Azadpur, Mayur Vihar Phase-I, Karkarduma and Welcome will be equipped with FOBs without travelators, while ramps are being added at Netaji Subhash Place, Lajpat Nagar and Kalkaji Mandir. At Janakpuri West, where the Blue Line is elevated and the Magenta Line runs approximately 17 metres below ground, extra-long escalators will provide direct concourse-level connectivity.

In addition, DMRC is introducing colour-coded guidance systems across interchange pathways to help commuters navigate easily, particularly first-time users.

The initiative forms part of DMRC’s broader efforts to improve last-mile connectivity and reduce congestion at interchange stations, making travel across Delhi’s expanding metro network more efficient and commuter-friendly.
