66 Indian Airports Achieve 100% Green Energy Operations

The Ministry of Civil Aviation (MoCA) has announced a significant milestone, revealing that 66 Indian airports have successfully transitioned to operating on 100% green energy. Gen (Dr) VK Singh (Retd) shared this accomplishment in a written response to a question posed in the Rajya Sabha, underscoring the government's dedication to minimizing the carbon footprint within India's aviation sector.

As part of this green initiative, MoCA has established a standardized Carbon Accounting and Reporting framework for all Indian airports. The ministry has directed airport operators engaged in scheduled operations to conduct a comprehensive mapping of carbon emissions at their respective airports. Furthermore, these operators are mandated to work systematically towards achieving carbon neutrality and net-zero emissions.

To further bolster environmental sustainability in the aviation sector, MoCA has issued guidance to the developers of upcoming Greenfield Airports and the relevant State Governments. The emphasis is on prioritizing measures that lead to Carbon Neutrality and Net Zero, with a specific focus on the utilization of green energy sources.

This concerted effort has yielded commendable results, with major airports like Delhi, Mumbai, Hyderabad, and Bengaluru attaining Level 4+ and higher Airports International Council (ACI) Accreditation. This accomplishment signifies that these airports have achieved carbon neutrality, marking a remarkable stride towards aligning India's aviation infrastructure with eco-friendly practices.
